When Sora is reunited with Kairi after unlocking his heart in the first Kingdom Hearts, he wants Kairi to stay in Traverse rather than taking her with him to Hollow Bastion. Albeit Kairi's will to stay with him and be helpful, she does finally understand that she would merely be a millstone around his neck when fighting against the heartless.

"Kairi: Take this. It's my lucky charm. Be sure to bring it back to me."

Therefore, she agrees to remain in a safe place while Sora fights; however, before he leaves, she bestows him her talisman - a star-shaped charm that can be used as a keyblade pendant (hence the name "Oathkeeper" for said keychain) - of which he has to promise to return it to her when they meet again (i.e. that they will meet again).

"Sora: Don't worry. I will. - Kairi: Promise."

He agrees and swears to bring it back to her when everything's over. After the end of KH1, though, they aren't reunited as of yet, because Kairi is thrown back on Destiny Islands while Sora remains in the place where they have locked Kingdom Hearts and it won't happen until the end of the second part that he can return it to her (this is seen in the ending FMV where they are meeting again on their island).
