Cheerful Sky
|| name

As can be seen in the profile section already (if anyone read it), Sora's name simply means "sky" when written in kanji. Well, nice, but not very special it seems. However, to hold forth about this we'll have to take a closer look on the names of the other characters, mainly Riku and Kairi. As for Riku, his name means "land" or "country" (mostly as the opposite of water, that is). I guess you can already see what this is aiming at.

Well, finally, "kairi" can mean two things, depending on the kanji used (unfortunately though, I have no idea about how the characters' names are written in kanji at all, as this is not a practice commonly seen in videogames and I haven't played any of the japanese versions either [i.e. I presume they are written in katakana all over anyway]). According to the Ikubundo Japanese-German Dictionary, it can either mean "nautical mile" or "dissociation".

As for the first one, I can see clearly the connection between the characters - sky, land and sea (quite a no-brainer, in fact). Omfg, trinity! However for the other, one could argue that it has something to do with the characters' relationship and interactions, or with the character of Kairi itself, but that should be further examined by a site fit to do so (which is basically not a Sora tribute imo; but maybe I'm just retarded or too lazy).

I have no idea who's actually in charge of deciding over the names of the characters, but there seems to be a trademark of Square (or recently Square Enix) using nature-themed names on their characters lately (for example we have Cloud, Aeris, Squall and Tidus). I think it's interesting, although there are lots of other cool names/name themes out there.
